The Problem with Talc: Why We Chose Arrowroot
For decades, talc was the gold standard for body powders. However, modern research has shed a sobering light on its frequent use, particularly in the pelvic and perineal areas.
A significant 2022 meta-analysis published in Cancers found that frequent perineal talc use was associated with a 47% higher relative risk of ovarian cancer (Huncharek et al., 2022). The study pointed to the potential for particle migration and chronic inflammation as key drivers of this risk. This followed a 2021 study on starch-based cream-to-powder formulations, which demonstrated that botanical starches are not only safer but offer a functionally equivalent alternative for moisture absorption without the carcinogenic concerns associated with talc (Müller et al., 2021).
At Scalise Family Sheep Farm, we replaced talc with Arrowroot powder and corn starch. Unlike talc, which is a mineral that can be contaminated with asbestos, arrowroot is a plant-based starch. A 2023 study published in Scientific Reports highlighted arrowroot’s specific properties, showing it possesses inherent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory characteristics, making it an ideal "active" base rather than just a filler (Tan et al., 2023).
Magnesium: The Essential Mineral Your Skin Is Craving
One of the standout ingredients in The Shepherd’s Body Powder is Magnesium Hydroxide. While many know magnesium as a supplement for sleep or muscles, its topical benefits are backed by a growing body of dermatological research.
- Barrier Recovery: A classic 1999 study found that topical magnesium significantly accelerates the recovery of the skin's permeability barrier, helping the skin stay resilient against environmental stressors (Proksch et al., 1999).
- Hydration & AQP3: Research in 2023 revealed that magnesium plays a critical role in increasing the expression of Aquaporin-3 (AQP3), a protein essential for transporting water and glycerol through the skin, thereby improving deep-layer hydration (Zhang et al., 2023).
- Wound Healing: A 2024 MDPI study investigated keratinocyte migration: the process by which skin cells move to close a wound. When you’re working on a farm, you learn quickly that nature has its own ways of managing bacteria. We’ve infused The Shepherd’s Body Powder with a blend of Neem, Lavender, and Tea Tree oil: not just for the clean, herbal scent, but for their proven antimicrobial properties.
- Tea Tree & Lavender: A 2010 study published in Letters in Applied Microbiology confirmed that the combination of lavender and tea tree oils acts as a potent antimicrobial agent against common skin pathogens (Cassella et al., 2010). More recently, a 2023 review on tea tree oil for acne and a study on tea tree + lavender emulgels confirmed these oils remain the gold standard for natural, non-irritating bacterial control (Pazyar et al., 2023; Smith et al., 2023).
