Summer can make skin feel simultaneously damp, oily, tight, and irritated. Heat increases sweating and sebum production, while humidity changes how quickly moisture evaporates. Add sunscreen, outdoor dust, repeated showers, towel-drying, and friction from clothing or skin folds, and the skin barrier can become stressed even when the surface feels moist.
A practical summer routine does not need to be complicated. For many people, the essentials are:
- Cleanse gently and only as much as needed.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry completely without aggressive rubbing.
- Apply a balm to genuinely dry areas.
- Use body powder only on clean, completely dry external skin where moisture and friction are concerns.

Why summer can disrupt moisture balance
The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, helps limit water loss from the body. Its structure depends on corneocytes: often compared to “bricks”: surrounded by intercellular lipids that act like “mortar.” When this barrier is disrupted, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) can rise. TEWL is the passive movement of water through the skin and is commonly used in research as one indicator of barrier function.
Summer introduces several competing effects:
- Heat increases sweating. Sweat can temporarily raise skin-surface hydration, but evaporation can leave skin feeling dry afterward.
- Sebum production may increase. Skin can feel greasy even while deeper or less oily areas are dehydrated.
- Humidity changes evaporation. High humidity may slow water loss from the surface, but it does not eliminate irritation from sweat, friction, or cleansing.
- Friction increases in damp areas. Inner thighs, underarms, abdominal folds, under-breast areas, the groin, and between toes can be affected by repeated rubbing.
- Frequent washing can be cumulative. Water exposure, surfactants, heat, and mechanical friction can all influence barrier function.
In a study of summer outdoor exposure, researchers measured hydration, sebum, TEWL, greasiness, and pH before and after participants spent time outdoors. The results showed that heat and outdoor exposure could increase sweat-related hydration, sebum, greasiness, and TEWL while lowering skin pH. The authors noted that hydration could later decrease as sweat evaporated.[1]
That helps explain why skin may feel sticky immediately after outdoor activity but tight later in the day.

Step 1: Cleanse gently with sheep milk soap: as tolerated
Begin with lukewarm water rather than very hot water. Hot water can feel relaxing, but prolonged heat may worsen dryness, flushing, or irritation for some people.
Use a small amount of cleanser on areas that actually need it, such as:
- Underarms
- Feet
- External groin and buttock areas
- Skin folds
- Areas with sunscreen, visible dirt, or heavy sweat
You may not need to vigorously soap every part of your body during every shower. For dry shins, forearms, or other easily irritated areas, rinsing with water may be sufficient on some days, depending on your activity and skin needs.
Our handcrafted sheep milk soap is made with sheep’s milk and other natural ingredients. Sheep’s milk contains fats, proteins, and other nutrients, but it is important not to overstate what remains biologically active in a finished bar after the soap-making process. Evidence about sheep milk itself should not automatically be treated as clinical evidence for every sheep milk soap.
A handmade or natural soap can still irritate reactive skin. True soap is alkaline, and fragrance or essential oils may trigger discomfort or allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible individuals. If your skin is sensitive, choose a fragrance-free option when available, avoid scrubbing, and test a new product on a small area first.
Research also suggests that cleanser choice and frequency should be individualized. In a randomized summer study involving children with controlled atopic dermatitis, washing with water alone was not inferior to washing with a cleanser on the opposite limb during the maintenance period.[2] This does not mean cleanser is always harmful or that water is always enough; it supports a simple principle: use the mildest effective cleansing approach for your skin.
Step 2: Rinse completely and dry without damaging the barrier
Rinse away soap, sweat, sunscreen, and powder residue thoroughly. Leftover cleanser can contribute to stinging or dryness, particularly in folds.
Then dry your skin carefully. “Pat dry” is useful shorthand, but it does not mean leaving folds damp. Moisture trapped under clothing or in skin folds can increase friction and discomfort.
A better approach is:
- Use a clean, soft towel.
- Press or use short, gentle strokes rather than vigorous scrubbing.
- Dry between toes and within external skin folds.
- Give damp areas a moment to air-dry before dressing.
- Do not use a powder to hide moisture that is still present.
A controlled study of washing and drying techniques found that washing increased TEWL and skin pH, with greater effects after repeated washing. Soap use was associated with more erythema than water alone. The investigators also found that patting was not automatically superior to gentle rubbing and could leave skin wetter, potentially increasing frictional risk.[3]
The practical lesson is not “never pat.” It is to dry thoroughly and gently, without treating the towel like a scrub brush.

Step 3: Apply skin balm to dry areas
After drying, inspect your skin rather than automatically applying a heavy product everywhere. A balm is most useful as a targeted step for areas that are rough, cracked, tight, or persistently dry, such as:
- Elbows and knees
- Heels
- Cuticles
- Dry hands
- Small areas of rough or flaky skin
Apply a thin layer and allow it to settle before dressing. Balms typically combine oils, butters, waxes, or other lipid-rich ingredients. These materials can soften the surface and reduce water loss by forming an occlusive or semi-occlusive film. That is different from adding water to the skin: the balm helps slow the water already present from evaporating.
Our handmade skin balms are intended for external use and include ingredients such as natural oils, mango butter, beeswax, lanolin, and frankincense essential oil, depending on the product. Because botanical oils and essential oils can bother reactive skin, people with a history of eczema or contact allergy may prefer a fragrance-free, clinically recommended moisturizer.
Timing matters, but “immediately after bathing” is not a magic deadline. A small crossover study involving children with atopic dermatitis and healthy skin compared bathing and moisturizing regimens. In the atopic dermatitis group, moisturizer use alone produced greater measured hydration over 90 minutes than bathing followed by immediate or delayed emollient application, while bathing without moisturizer provided the least benefit.[4] The study was small, but it reinforces the value of applying an appropriate moisturizer when skin is dry rather than relying on bathing alone.
A separate summer trial in adults with mild atopic dermatitis found that a specific pseudo-ceramide and eucalyptus-containing moisturizer improved hydration, dryness, erythema, itch, and quality of life compared with no moisturizer.[5] Those results support continued summer moisturization for people who need it, but they do not prove that every balm: or any particular farm-made balm: will produce the same results.
Step 4: Use body powder only on completely dry external skin
Body powder is not a substitute for bathing or drying. Use it only after the skin is clean and fully dry, and only where moisture or friction is a recurring concern.
Potential areas include:
- Inner thighs
- Underarms
- External skin folds
- Feet
- Between the toes, if appropriate for your skin
Use a small amount. Apply close to the skin to avoid creating an airborne cloud, and wash your hands afterward. Never intentionally inhale powder. Do not apply powder to broken, bleeding, infected, or seriously inflamed skin; mucous membranes; or inside body openings.
Avoid placing powder directly over a thick layer of balm. Powder and balm serve different purposes: powder is for dry, friction-prone external skin, while balm is for targeted dry areas. Using both heavily in the same location may create buildup and additional irritation.

How often should you shower?
There is no single correct summer schedule. Shower after heavy sweating, swimming, or visibly dirty work, but avoid turning every shower into a long, hot, full-body scrubbing session.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of bathing frequency in atopic dermatitis found that daily bathing or showering was not associated with worse disease severity, although the optimal frequency and specific bathing conditions remain uncertain.[6] In other words, frequency alone is not the whole routine. Water temperature, cleanser, duration, drying, moisturization, and individual tolerance all matter.
For persistent dryness, reduce heat and friction first. For recurring rash in a fold, worsening itch, oozing, pain, cracking, or suspected infection, seek clinical care rather than adding more soap or powder.
A simple summer checklist
- Use lukewarm water.
- Clean the areas that need cleansing.
- Choose fragrance-free products for reactive skin.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry all areas completely using gentle pressure or short strokes.
- Apply balm to dry areas, not automatically everywhere.
- Apply powder only to clean, completely dry external skin.
- Avoid powder inhalation and mucous membranes.
- Do not use products on broken skin unless advised by a clinician.
- Stop a product if it burns or causes a new rash.
- Seek medical advice for symptoms that persist or worsen.
The goal is not to remove every trace of sweat or natural oil. It is to keep skin clean, comfortable, and supported while minimizing unnecessary barrier disruption.
